The first meeting of 2001 was held on February 7. It proved most enjoyable and productive.
After extending a warm welcome to all present, chairman Roland extended his and the committee's condolences to Mrs. Sharland on the recent death of her father. Roland also expressed get well wishes to president Mavis, who was confined to quarters. It is believed to be the first meeting Mavis has missed in the years since she founded the charity.
Roland mentioned how delighted he had been by the Tenby Observer's co-operation during the last year - indeed, its co-operation every year.
"Thank you for printing our gleanings and in running the special coverage on the role that the charity plays in the community," he said. "The ready help given at all times is greatly appreciated."
Among the many subjects discussed were mainly fund-raising ventures for the future; also successes since they last met.
Obviously delight was expressed by all present for the wonderful efforts from the November coffee morning in Church House; also the Penally cheese and wine lunch organised by the ladies of St. Nicholas and St. Teilo Church - events that were much enjoyed by all who attended, helpers and consumers alike.
Particular thanks to the ladies for all their hard work which was much appreciated.
This year there will be no Cawl Morning to celebrate St. David's Day, as it was felt it would be in competition with other events in town. It was therefore decided to hold a Welsh Tea afternoon in early June - June 5 being the popular choice. The date chosen for the early year coffee morning, meanwhile, is April 28, to be held in Church House, Upper Frog Street, when it is hoped to welcome friends old and new. There will be the usual attractions and everyone is looking forward to another happy morning, hopefully enhanced by sunshine.
A request from Mr. Philip Smith, community nurse, for equipment totalling approximately £3,000, was discussed and approved. His enclosed letter of thanks for the continued support of Friends of the Community was read, thanks which must be shared by all the loyal supporters of this worthwhile local charity.
The committee wish to thank the following for their kind donations recently received: St. Mary's £250; Greenhill Secondary School £41; use of equipment £5; November coffee morning £430; Manorbier Post Office £14; Kilgetty Autumn Show £355; anonymous donations of £20 and £33; St. Nicholas and St. Teilo, Penally, £131; in memoriam, Mrs. Phyllis Barnes - £140.
On behalf of the patients who will be helped by these generous donations, thank you.
The next meeting will be held on May 2, 4.30 pm at the Health Centre.
