A clean-up operation has been mounted to remove scores of wrecked fridges washed up on an isolated Pembrokeshire cove. The new fridges - and the container they were being transported in - were smashed on rocks at Precipe Bay near Manorbier. The cargo had been swept overboard from a container ship off St. Ann's Head during stormy weather in September. Around the same time a second container containing raisins, thought to be from the same vessel, was found a few miles away at Caldey Island, near Tenby. Workmen from Pembrokeshire County Council carried out the clear-up on Sunday, during which they removed around six tons of metal. They were aided in their task by a crane-mounted amphibious vehicle currently working on the new lifeboat station at Tenby. The remains of the fridges and the container were later taken to a council depot at Thornton, Milford Haven.

The amphibious vehicle unloads its cargo of smashed vehicles onto county council lorries at Penally.
