On Friday the 13th, Tenby United Youth team, sponsored by PRL Plant Hire, continued their league campaign against a powerful Cardigan side, with the intention of gaining revenge for the three defeats they suffered against them last season. Unfortunately, a combination of dropped passes, wrong options, powerful tackling by the visitors, two disallowed tries and little 'rub of the green', saw them suffer their first league defeat of the season, albeit by the narrowest of margins. After only 10 minutes, the Cardigan prop left the field and, with no replacement front row players, the referee had no option but to introduce uncontested scrums, which severely nullified one of Tenby's attacking ploys, that of back-row attacks. Dominating possession, Tenby failed to impose themselves on the visitors and things got worse for the young Seasiders when inspirational flanker Nick Drewett was injured and had to be replaced by M. Fleming. To accommodate the early change, manager John Handicott switched several players around. It was learned after the game that Nick might have to miss the remainder of the season. To compound their bad luck, Cardigan got the first score of the game with a penalty right on the stroke of half-time. The second half started ominously for the home side, with Cardigan scoring very early on when they broke away from well inside the Tenby half to cross in the corner to extend their lead to 8-0. The pressure applied by Tenby throughout the first half was maintained as the second half unfolded and the home side eventually got their due reward when Ross McKenzie crossed for a well-worked try that was converted by Adam Ball to narrow the margin to one point. But try as they might, that turned out to be the only score Tenby could muster. Their best opportunity came close to the end when Adam Ball failed with a penalty attempt that would have snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat, but as manager John Handicott said after the game: "It was just one of those nights and we were simply destined not to win"... and put all their misfortune down to it being Friday the 13th! He went on the say that the team perhaps needed this wake-up call and hoped that the players who failed to attend training sessions would turn-up in future. Tenby squad: D. Colley, D. Williams, R.
