Colby Gallery is delighted to welcome back Frances Payne for her third solo exhibition in the Small Gallery. Earlier this year, she took part in the Gardens of Wales Festival at Aberglasney, where, unsurprisingly, most of her work was eagerly snapped up.

As a result, she has spent the last months of the summer busily replenishing stocks, hence, Colby will be showcasing mainly her most recent work. Very much in tune with the ambient surroundings, this latest exhibition rejoices in the name of 'Woodland and Wayside'.

\Her meticulously observed studies of the plants and insect life around her home near Llanboidy blend harmoniously with the surrounding eight acres of National Trust woodland gardens.

Indeed, the botanical details are so life-like that walking up the steps into the Small Gallery is almost akin to finding oneself in a hitherto undiscovered part of the gardens.

Only the juxtaposition of seasons might prove a little confusing, for Frances can depict the delicate shades of spring in shy violets, primroses and daffodils, alongside the vibrant colours of roses and peonies in high summer, through to the rustic and earthy hues of mellow autumn.

Amongst them you will find a scattering of caterpillars, butterflies, and all manner of creatures crawly, but not necessarily creepy.

One can only stand wide-eyed in wonder at the extraordinary beauty of the detail brushed on in the lightest strokes of watercolour.

This is an exhibition which provides the perfect accompaniment to your walk round the gardens on a crisp autumn day, and it may also provide you with a perfect original piece of art to accompany you on your way back home!

Frances's smaller paintings make affordable gifts too. Starting at around £35, they make an ideal gift for that special occasion, or maybe some early Christmas shopping.

The exhibition runs from September 23 to October 13, open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, along with the woodland gardens, National Trust shop and Bothy Tearoom.

NB. Entries are now being accepted for the 'Colours of Colby' photograph competition, under 16s and adults. Also, a few places are still available for the Graham Hadlow Watercolour Workshop on October 25. For further information, please ring the gallery on 814200.
