Former Welsh and Lions rugby superstars Shane Williams and Mike Phillips will go head-to-head for charity when they take on the popular Carten ride from Cardiff to Tenby next year.
The ex-teammates will race each other when they take on the 108-mile bike ride on May 2, with ‘Team Mike’ going up against ‘Team Shane’ in a bid to raise over £50,000 for the Velindre Cancer Centre.
Shane is no stranger to taking on sporting events in Tenby, most recently completing the Ironman Wales triathlon in September.
"It’s a ride I haven’t done - I’ve been told some good things. I’ve always wanted to do the Carten, so when Mike Phillips issued his challenge I was well up for it!” he said.
“As proud Patron of Velindre I was really pleased that they will be the beneficiary charity, so decided I needed to ride the event myself.
“So I’ve gathered a few mates and formed #teamShane and together we will be raising as much money as possible to support cancer patients and their families in Wales.
“It’ll be nice to be on the road together with Mike, we haven’t done anything like this together before.
“Some of us have had a bit more spare time on their hands but it’s all tongue-in-cheek of course we’re competitive but more importantly it’s about making sure we all get to Tenby and raise a lot of money in the mean time. But obviously I’m going to win!” he joked.
Mike said: “It’s great it’s for charity - a great cause. It’s got that bit of competitive edge - but it’s all about having fun really. It’s good to be back with Shane.”
Velindre is Wales’ premier cancer centre providing treatment, care and support to patients and their families.
