Amroth and District Community Association has received a substantial amount of funding towards the building of a play park at Summerhill.

The village carnival ran from 1998 until heavy restrictions, insurance, health and safety issues, meant it was too costly to continue after the 2004 event.

The carnival, in its day, raised many thousands in its six-year history, donating monies to local causes and charities. The village was always bustling with stalls, fun rides and food outlets, the event being the highlight of the summer season.

Each year of its popular life, the committee paid out some £20,000 to get the show on the road, funding fireworks, air displays, entertainment and bands, with a healthy profit for charity.

After the 2004 event, the committee held and banked funds in case the carnival started again in future years.

The money, though, has never been used, so the carnival committee, Roger and Jane Harries, William Thwaites, Glyn James, Janet James, Mike Able, Geraint Thomas, Terry Sissons, John Rawson, Ruth Davies, with Mike and Sue Brown, decided it should be given to a cause of their choosing.

The Amroth and District Community Association has been the recipient, to help fund the Summerhill Play Park to the advantage of children of the parish.

The cheque for £13,332.18, which was handed over to Joyce Lewis, will be match-funded by Planed to build the structures, with work due to begin within the next two weeks.
