Folly Farm, Begelly, has announced the arrival of six white-eyed assassin bugs to help celebrate National Insect Week and to encourage visitors to the attraction to learn more about some of the planet's most fascinating creatures.  More known for its furry farmyard animals and exotic zoo species, Folly Farm is also home to a number of insects in its pet centre and the assassin bugs will soon be neighbouring Madagascan hissing cockroaches, death head cockroaches and some New Guinea giant spiny stick insects. The assassin bugs, so named for their tendency to wait in ambush for their prey, have black bodies and black and yellow legs. Sometimes referred to as white spot assassin bugs, their distinctive wing markings have two large white spots.  Folly Farm's senior farm livestock supervisor, Laura Jones, said of the arrival of the predatory bugs: "With their distinctive black, yellow and white markings, the assassin bugs will make a colourful addition to the pet centre.   "At Folly Farm, we always seek to educate as well as entertain, so it's great to be able to encourage visitors to learn more about the less cuddly creatures we have! The assassin bugs will make an interesting new topic when our popular creepy crawly talks and handling sessions return this Hallowe'en," she continued. Professor Lin Field, president of the Royal Entomological Society, which organises National Insect Week, said: "We are pleased that Folly Farm is broadening its variety of insects for visitors to see and learn about. We hope that people will take the opportunity during National Insect Week to discover more about these fascinating creatures." Staff at Folly Farm will need to wear protective gloves when handling the assassin bugs as they can bite and when disturbed they can also spray a saliva which is an irritant to eyes. When prey is captured, the assassin bugs inject saliva that contains enzymes to reduce it into an easily digestible soup. Folly Farm is open every day from 10 am until 5.30 pm until September 30; opening times vary after this date so please check.
