Pembrokeshire County Council councillors and officers are pictured celebrating another award- winning year for the county's beaches. For Pembrokeshire has again been awarded more Blue Flags than any other local authority in Wales. As reported in last week's Observer, at this year's Blue Flag Awards ceremony, it was announced that Pembrokeshire had won 11 Blue Flags - the same as last year. This is in addition to winning 14 Green Coast Awards earlier this year. The county's award-winning beaches include: Amroth, Broadhaven North, Dale, Lydstep, Newgale Sands, Poppit Sands, Whitesands, Saundersfoot, Tenby Castle, Tenby North and Tenby South. Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said the beach awards were good news for both local people and visitors. "We have always known that we have top quality beaches in Pembrokeshire and the awards we have been given year after year confirm it," he said. This year, Wales is boasting a record 44 Blue Flag beaches and five marinas. The Blue Flag Awards - the most prestigious beach award in Europe - is run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy and takes into account 29 criteria including bathing water quality and beach facilities such as public toilets and lifeguard provision.
