Several 999 calls were received from members of the public reporting the sighting of a red flare fired from a vessel off Lydstep Haven shortly before 5 pm on Saturday.
Investigations identified the 23-foot motor boat 'Laughing Girl' with two persons on board, which had fired a flare of orange smoke after the boat had gone over a large wave, resulting in its engine cutting out.
The boat was drifting towards rocks at the eastern side of Lydstep Haven when the skipper, who was accompanied by his young son, managed to get the Z-drive engine ticking over enough to bring the vessel back to its moorings at Lydstep.
Manorbier coastguard attended, delivering suitable safety advice.
