Tenby Utd. 43 pts.

A five-try second half salvo saw Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby United swamp near neighbours Pembroke in their rearranged league clash at Heywood Lane on Wednesday night.

A seventh successive victory and another crucial bonus point lifts the United close to the promotion places with seven games left to play in the campaign.

The first half had the look and feel of a Pembrokeshire derby, with both sides conceding too many penalties and losing players to the sin-bin.

But the United constantly had the upper hand and were able to force positions deep in Scarlets territory and showed great maturity in taking points on offer to seize the advantage.

Three first half penalties from stand-off Tom Lewis gave the United a comfortable cushion, but the platform had been laid by the impressive home eight, with lock Jonny Lane impressive at the restart and in open play.

Try-scoring opportunities were few and far between in the first 40, but the powerful running of Sam Smith set up the best chances in the opening period and the number eight was to prove even more influential after the break.

A nine-point lead at the turnaround soon became 12 points as Lewis slotted a fourth goal after he had been high tackled just outside the visitors' 22.

The Scarlets fought doggedly to try and get back in the match, but never quite had the firepower to challenge the Seasiders' domination in the tight.

Having built a useful lead, the United began to turn the screw, but it was not until the game had almost entered its final quarter that they claimed their first touchdown.

Picking up from the base of a scrum, Sam Smith made useful ground before the forwards gained perfect ruck ball, allowing pacy flanker Timoci 'Big Jim' Kaumaitotoya to carve his way through the Pembroke defences for the opening try. Lewis added the extras to extend the lead to 19-0.

And the bustling blindside was at it again just minutes later, feeding off yet another powerful Sam Smith surge to cross wide on the left for an unconverted score.

The United now had the bit between their teeth and the visitors were left to defend desperately. But they were unable to halt a tide of Tenby attacks, excellent work from Nicky Guymer, Sam Smith and Gavin Brace allowing hard working skipper Harry Bolton to cross for the third try.

The Tenby coaching team then started a flurry of late replacements, with Bolton giving way for Luke Dedman, Robbie Clarke being replaced by Mark Brace after an excellent all-round game and Terry John taking over at hooker from Nicky Guymer.

John was straight in the action and after the United had done well to spread the Pembroke defence right then left, he was on hand to cross for the vital bonus point score. Lewis added the conversion to stretch the United lead to 36-0.

But the Seasiders weren't done and saved possibly the best score of the evening until last. A quick tap penalty deep in Tenby territory created space and backs and forwards linked well and stretched a tired Scarlets defence. Centre Dan Colley showed good strength and a neat side-step to bundle over for the home side's fifth try that took them past the 40-point mark.

Building on the bonus point victory over Pembroke Dock Quins, this was another great result for the United as they push hard for promotion. They will hope to stay on track in their next outing when they taken on Amman United at Heywood Lane on Saturday, March 27.
