There's lots of fishy fun for all the family in Pembrokeshire Fish Week, which casts off tomorrow (Saturday). "Fish Week is bigger than ever this year, with nearly 150 events all over the county," said organiser Kate Morgan, food officer for Pembrokeshire County Council. "The week from June 23 to July 1 is packed with beach activities, cookery demonstrations and tastings, angling competitions, and cultural events. "Food-lovers are spoilt for choice with over 50 special fish and shellfish menus at local restaurants and cafes. "There's also plenty for children to do, from snorkel safaris to rocky shore explorations, crab-catching, and fishy-inspired craft workshops," she added. There are many events in South Pembrokeshire this year to enjoy. Don't miss Harbour Happenings at Tenby Harbour this Sunday, from 11 am to 3 pm, a special Fish Week family day. Sample fresh local fish and seafood, watch demonstrations by expert fish craftsman Duncan Lucas and local chef Andrew Swales, and enjoy live music from the Pembrokeshire Schools Junior Jazz Band. New this year are lots of free sporty events at Tenby's beaches for children (from 12 noon to 3 pm), with families welcome to join in. For under-eights there's an obstacle course, parachute games, mini-volley ball, beach challenges and more at Harbour Beach. At North Beach, under 16s can take part in volley ball, ultimate Frisbee, mini-tennis, beach cricket, beach rounders and tag rugby. The activities have been arranged by Sport Pembrokeshire as part of an initiative called 5x60 'Get with it' - to encourage children to do more sport. Younger tots can enjoy face-painting and a bouncy castle, which will be there throughout the day. There's also a spectacular fishy procession down High Street to Tenby Harbour at 1 pm - the seaside sculptures will be produced in a family sculpture workshop tomorrow (Saturday) at the De Valence. Families can also enjoy a seaside family craft session at Tenby's National Park Centre on Tuesday, from 2.30 pm to 4 pm - enjoy creating creatures and shapes of the sea. One of Britain's most exciting young chefs, Chris Tanner, will be hosting the annual Fish and Shellfish Masterclass at the De Valence in Tenby on Wednesday, at 7.30 pm. Chris, who runs two acclaimed restaurants in Plymouth and is a rising TV star, will be preparing and demonstrating inspirational recipe ideas with fresh local fish and shellfish. The Masterclass will also include advice on wines to accompany the dishes from Roy Roberts, of Celtic Wines. Tickets are available from the De Valence Box Office on 01834 843568 (open between 9 am and 1 pm from Monday to Friday). They cost £10 which includes a glass of wine, courtesy of Celtic Wines. There's also lots of events on at Saundersfoot Harbour for the whole family to enjoy. Don't miss the Midsummer Mackerel Madness - a fresh mackerel barbecue opposite the Mermaid restaurant on Saturday, June 30 (12 noon to 2 pm). On Sunday, July 1, there's the Saundersfoot Seafood Experience - demonstrations, recipes and tastings of fresh local fish and shellfish by a trio of Saundersfoot chefs. The event, which also has live music and a fresh mackerel barbecue, is from 12 noon to 3 pm and located near the Tourist Information Centre. Children and families can also enjoy a Seashore Safari at Saundersfoot beach on July 1 from 1 pm to 3 pm - meet at the beach slipway. Kate Morgan said Pembrokeshire Fish Week is now one of the most popular annual festivals in West Wales, attracting some 15,000 visitors last year. "The festival launches tomorrow (Saturday) at Milford Haven Marina with an open family day - go aboard HMS Mersey, enjoy fish cookery and demonstrations, a speed filleting competition, children's activities, many stalls, and more," she said. Pembrokeshire Fish Week celebrates the abundance of fish and seafood found around the county's coastline. It is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council.
