Just when you thought it was safe to go fishing in a quiet Pembrokeshire village harbour, a possible shark sighting might have seen Steven Spielberg pulling up his director’s chair!

Fisherman Dave Townsend said he was visiting Saundersfoot on Wednesday morning last week for a couple of hours fishing when he thinks he spotted a 15ft basking shark.

“I had no luck fishing, and was about to pack up when a very large shark appeared swimming towards the beach!” he said.

“I watched it for about 30 seconds, and it was last seen heading towards Coppet Hall,” continued Dave, who said that the shark had also been seen by a couple out walking around 15 minutes before his sighting.

“They said to me they’d just seen something very big with a huge fin swimming towards my fishing gear, and I laughed thinking they were joking, but was shortly to find out they were telling the truth!

“The tide was going out when it appeared and it only had about four-foot of water.

“Assuming it is a basking shark, it should not attack people, but I would not want to be hit by its tail! The photos I took don’t show it in great detail, but show how close it was to the shore,” added Dave.
