Pembrokeshire Fish Week got off to a great start at the weekend. A record number of visitors turned up to the quayside at Milford Haven as the popular fish festival got underway on Saturday. Thousands of people visited the family day at Milford Marina, with another large crowd attending events in Tenby on Sunday. Music and entertainment added to the carnival atmosphere as families visited the many stalls, demonstrations, fish tastings and sales on offer at the Milford launch. Celebrity chef Angela Grey gave demonstrations of her culinary skills, while fish craftsman Duncan Lucas showed off his filleting techniques. Visitors were also able to board the MAFF vessel HMS Mersey, which was anchored alongside the dockside for the day. A pirate performance inside an inflatable whale was a big hit with children, who also enjoyed a free pavement-painting workshop, story-telling sessions, face painting and an open-air magic show. The popular annual filleting competition was won by Steve McKay, of JS Fish Direct, who won £100 sponsored by Milford Haven Town Council. Sharon Thrower, of Tesco, Pembroke Dock, came second. Sunday saw more tasting sessions, cookery and filleting demonstrations, as well as beach sports for youngsters of all ages, with the County Junior Jazz Band keeping everyone entertained. "This year's opening weekend was another great success with a record attendance," said Kate Morgan, Pembrokeshire County Council food officer. "There was a fantastic atmosphere on the quayside and everyone had a good time." And it's not over yet. Highlights to come later this week include more fishing events and a plethora of eating out experiences. Now in its eighth year, Fish Week is a feast for families, foodies and anglers alike, with over 100 events taking place across the county to celebrate Pembrokeshire's maritime heritage. Pembrokeshire Fish Week, which continues until Sunday, is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council and supported by South West Wales Tourism, Welsh Assembly Government and Milford Haven Port Authority.
