Preparations are well underway for one of Pembrokeshire's most popular annual festivals.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week has flourished since it started five years ago, with 40 events now taking place over the week.

"The event is designed to boost the fishing industry, and raise awareness of the wonderful fish and seafood available from Pembrokeshire's coast and rivers," said Kate Morgan, food and craft officer at Pembrokeshire County Council.

"It also aims to create out-of-season tourism and business opportunities in the county through catering, retail, culture, entertainment and environmental activities."

This year's festival will be held from Saturday, June 26 until Sunday, July 4.

New events include a 'Soul and Sole' evening at the Queen's Hall in Narberth with a Creole-style menu and dancing to a live band; a chowder night, crab catching, a school competition, and a fishing day specifically for those with disabilities.

They will complement celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, children's fishing and snorkelling trips, speed filleting, angling competitions, boat trips and island walks.

"There will also be plenty of exciting fish and shellfish on menus and in retail outlets throughout the county," said Kate.

"This year's theme fish is crab, including spider crab, which is a favourite from our coast. We will be developing a number of recipes and other activities based around it."

She said environmental issues would be high on the agenda, with guidance on which fish we should be eating and why.

"We will also be raising awareness of the seasonality of fish and shellfish to both caterers and the public, and encouraging the use of less well-known and less favoured species," said Kate.
