One of the UK's leading authorities on fish is to judge the speed filleting competition in Pembrokeshire Fish Week.

The competition at the opening family day in Milford Haven on June 26 will be adjudicated by Martyn Boyers, chief executive, of Grimsby Fish Market.

"The Sea Fish industry has many traditional skills and one of the most important is filleting," said Martyn. "This is demonstrated during Fish Week by way of a competition which I am delighted to be associated with.

"There are fewer people now attracted to work in the industry and fish filleting is one of those skills that is now in demand, as nearly all fish has to be processed."

He added that Pembrokeshire Fish Week was regarded as one of the best events to promote and stimulate interest in the eating of seafood.

"Seafood consumption is on the increase, the Sea Fish industry is dynamic and diverse and Pembrokeshire Fish Week illustrates this wonderfully well," he said.

The competition, sponsored by Milford Haven Town Council, will be held on the opening day at Milford Haven Marina on June 26.

"It's a very popular event and attracts a large crowd. It's great fun to watch and there's always a close finish," said Kate Morgan, food officer at Pembrokeshire County Council.

Other demonstrations planned for Fish Week include a Fish and Shellfish Masterclass with celebrity chef Ross Burden - an evening of inspirational recipes at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven on Wednesday, June 30.

Tickets are on sale at the Torch Theatre Box Office at £10 (£8 concessions) and include a glass of wine, sponsored by Celtic Wine.

Visitors to the launch at Milford Haven Marina will also be entertained by fish and shellfish cookery and filleting demonstrations by celebrity chef, Dudley Newbury and Champion Fish Craftsman, Duncan Lucas.

Duncan will also be taking part in 'Fishy Happenings' at Tenby Harbour on Sunday, June 27, with top local chef Mark Phillips, chef proprietor of the Stone Crab in Saundersfoot.

Another accomplished local chef Anne Owston, of the George's in Haverfordwest, will be hosting a 'Watch and Taste' session at the town's Farmers Market on Friday, July 2. Visitors to the market will have the chance to watch and taste fresh fish, shellfish, and local produce incorporated into delicious recipes.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week, now in its fifth year, takes place between June 26 and July 4. The family-friendly event celebrates the county's fantastic range of fish and seafood - not to mention its spectacular coastline - with a packed programme of activities. They range from sea angling trips to chowder nights, sushi tastings, coastal rambles, nature watches, and fishing competitions.
