Last year in April, Pembrokeshire went into mourning as two members of the same family were tragically lost, fishing for shellfish off the coast of St. Davids.
Spike (Gareth) and Dan Willington, a father and son from Carew, were skilled fishermen and the sinking of their vessel Harvester came as a shock to everyone, not least the family left behind.
The community went to great lengths to rally at the time of the crisis and over £12,000 was raised in support via the web platform Just Giving.
Following the success of the fundraising event they put on last year, The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Company will hold another Spike and Dan’s fish and chip fundraiser on Saturday at Freshwater West beach. All profits from the sale of portions of fish and chips will be split equally and go towards both the Willington family and registered charity The Fishermen’s Mission who do great work to support families and victims who have experienced tragedy at sea.
Jonathan Williams, owner of The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Co, said: “Last year, we described Spike and Dan as the unsung heroes of real food, and nothing has changed one year later. We’d like to continue our support and plan to hold the event annually.”
He went on to say: “We’ve chosen to split the money raised in aid of The Fishermen’s Mission who are a national charity, but have a local base in Milford Haven. Fishing is huge in our small community and its only right that there are resources to help those who need them.”
The small beach food shack at Fresh West will host the event from midday to 6 pm on Saturday.
