The first steps have been taken to create a unique Pembrokeshire 'museum' on the website. Pembrokeshire County Council has teamed up with its counterpart local authority in Carlow, Ireland, to create two distinct but closely linked 'virtual museums' covering each area. At present, Pembrokeshire's heritage and culture is scattered around the county in the form of county council and independently-run museums, historic landmarks and natural landscapes. The Cultural X-Change project with Carlow will bring all these important features together by making them accessible through a website, due to come on-line next year. Launching the project in the County Library, Haverfordwest, on Friday, the council's cabinet member for cultural services, Clr. Rob Lewis, said the public's help was needed to enable the project to fulfil its aims. "If members of the public have any artefacts or photographs that are of significance to Pembrokeshire's heritage, please let us know," he said. "We can produce images of the items on the website using scanner and digital cameras without the owners having to relinquish possession of the objects." Clr. Lewis also appealed for volunteers to come forward who can help with creating the digital images. "The process of creating digital images is a relatively simple but time-consuming task," he explained. Due to the limited funding and timescale, we are encouraging volunteers to get involved with the scanning and recording of artefacts. "It doesn't matter if you have very little experience of using computers. Full training and support will be provided." The Pembrokeshire aspect of the project is funded through the European Union's Interreg IIIA programme and Pembrokeshire County Council. • To get involved in the project, call Owen Roberts on (01437) 731328 or e-mail: [email protected]">[email protected]
