Saundersfoot Chamber of Tourism were extremely delighted with their latest venture in the village. The open-air concert was a real village partnership, commented Phil Baker, and the support and expertise of Texaco in staging such a performance was invaluable.

But village support was also readily forthcoming. The Sports and Social Club provided the natural amphitheatre and refreshments for the orchestra, and during the evening, the community council donated the use of their car park for use by emergency vehicles.

So, after much planning and organising, Saturday, June 2, arrived, the marquee and staging were in place, sound system rigged and the playing field look superb. The afternoon was clear and sunny and the whole valley was soon filled with the sound of the children's workshop orchestra (accompanied by the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra). The workshop was a huge success, attracting children from many local schools.

The Cardiff Philharmonic then began to rehearse for the main concert, and to the surprise of the Chamber, the audience started to arrive with picnics at 4.30 pm.

At 7.30 pm prompt, Mr. Phil Thompson, of Texaco, introduced the huge family crowd to Mr. Michael Ball, the conductor. The evening was perfect and the programme of classical music was enjoyed by the crowd (which had come to Saundersfoot from all over the county). The climax of the night was the 1812 Overture, which was accompanied by the Chamber's own firework team, and by the final rocket burst the whole crowd were on their feet cheering for more. The orchestra did not disappoint and the audience clapped and sang along to 'The Great Escape!

This can only be the first in a series of concerts, commented the Chamber, and with all the support they received there are many thank yous to be made.

Sarah Oliver and Pembrokeshire County Council; the local police for help and support; Alyson Smith and the sound crew; all ticket sellers; Saundersfoot Rotary Club for providing stewards; UK Fire for fire extinguishers; St. John Ambulance; Dave Williams and Steve Allen for moving the staging.

Most importantly of all, the Chamber would like to thank all the music lovers from far and near who once again supported a village event.
