With the usual busy Bank Holiday weekend experienced by the county's rescue services, there was also a first call for Tenby's new Tamar Class lifeboat, the Haydn Miller. Following a Mayday call to Swansea Coastguard Operations Room at 9.15 am on Saturday morning, the new lifeboat was launched to assist a yacht with four persons on board which was taking in water and sinking 14 miles east of Tenby off Burry Holms on the Gower Peninsular. The Burry Port inshore lifeboat was also launched and its mechanic managed to get a pump aboard the yacht, called 'Hustle Bustle', and started pumping the water out. As there are no facilities for repair at Burry Port, the vessel was towed by the Tenby lifeboat to Tenby harbour, where the crew members were landed ashore, with he local Coastguard team being on hand to offer safety advice. "Although the Tamar class lifeboat has not yet been officially placed on station, it was decided to use it on this occasion because of its extra speed and because there were fears that persons were in the water in what was a serious situation," said Bob James, of Tenby Lifeboat. "The Tamar handled beyond our expectations in all areas and the speed maintained showed just how much faster the vessel is, completing the journey from Tenby to the Gower in approximately 27 minutes. We are very pleased and proud of her," added Mr. James. In other call-outs over the weekend, on Sunday at 5.35 pm, the inshore lifeboat was launched following a call from the Rhib 'Tickle 2', which had broken down with an overheated engine between Caldey Island and the mainland at Tenby. The vessel, with two brothers aboard, was towed back to Lydstep. Tenby Coastguard team also attended and gave safety advice. Another incident late on Sunday afternoon saw the licensed 'tripping' motor vessel 'Concorde' broadcast a panpan alert stating she had broken down 300 metres off Saundersfoot beach with an overheated engine. Tenby inshore lifeboat was again launched and took the vessel with one crew and two passengers on board in tow back to Saundersfoot harbour. Tenby Coastguard team again attended the call-out to give safety advice.
