The club's premier strokeplay championship over 36 holes took place last Sunday, when a fine dry morning was replaced by a rather wet afternoon.

COBB CUP

After the morning round, only four shots separated nine golfers. Brian Cramb on 71 led the field, with Gavin Scotcher one behind on 72, closely followed by Ben Childs (73) and Alan Jones (74).

In the afternoon, 'Tenby's lowest handicapper' Paul Haley began his round brilliantly with three birdies and three pars, catching Tenby's 'oldest lowest handicapper', Brian Cramb, in the process.

Heavy rain fell for over an hour in mid-afternoon, but this did not affect the scoring.

Alan Jones came in with a fine 68 and Paul Haley a 69, while Brian Cramb with a 70 proved the steadiest of them all and with his 71 in the morning won the Cobb Cup on 141.

Alan Jones' 68 enabled him to close the gap to one stroke on 142, with Paul Haley in third place on 144.

Leading scores: Brian Cramb 70-71-141; Alan Jones 74-68-142; Paul Haley 75-69-144; Ben Childs 73-73-146; Gavin Scotcher 72-76-148; John Morris 75-74-149.

This is the first time Brian Cramb has won the Cobb Cup, which is rather surprising, as his successes in the matchplay championship for the Scratch Cup have been numerous.

Brian was delighted with his win and seemed quite pleased to learn that at 56 he was easily the most senior winner of the trophy. Most of the winners are in their 20s or 30s, except for one recent winner, John Gottwaltz, who must have given Brian a close run!

Brian would be disappointed if it was not mentioned that for the first time in his golfing life he has obtained the sought-after handicap of scratch (0), although I'm sure Brian would agree that it is a little easier to obtain now than when he was in this prime!

REGIMENTAL BOWL

The club's handicap committee, with its secretary Eamon Maher, appear to be successful in sorting out any false handicaps. Only three golfers outside category one (up to 5), Tim Edwards (11) Dave Roberts (13) and Geoff Lees (12) were in the top 10 overall net scores.

Alan Jones (3) with net scores of 71 and 65 won the Regimental Bowl by three shots from Brian Cramb's (1) 70 and 69, with Tim Edwards (11) in third place with rounds of 72 and 69.

Leading scores: Alan Jones (3) 71-65-136; Brian Cramb (1) 70-69-139; Tim Edwards (11) 72-69-141; Gareth Powell (5) 70-73-143.
