Sir,
May I through your column express my great concern about the noisy powerful (commercial) fireworks that are allowed to be put off in close-knit residential areas (i.e. back gardens), frightening the elderly, very young children and animals.
I feel that this should be confined to open spaces away from homes and residential areas.
My daughter's family has recently been affected by this, so much so that my three-year-old granddaughter, who already has problems, was extremely frightened and traumatised by the very loud noises and flashes created by the fireworks. This has resulted in her being unable to sleep at night and very nervous of loud noises of any sort and seeking help from her doctor.
This has left my daughter at her wits end, trying to cope with great difficulty in an already stressful situation.
I hope this letter will make people think and realise that fireworks are not always fun for all, but can have an adverse effect, causing a lot of misery to many.
I would like to mention - I enjoy going to organised fireworks displays.

Lammas Hay,
Redberth.
