The latest offering from Films4Tenby on Monday at the Fourcroft Hotel, was Sunshine on Leith. This is the 2013 film version of the hit West End musical of the same name. Watching it was a fun way to spend 90 minutes or so. It tells the story of two young Scots lads (Ally and Davy) returning home to Edinburgh after a tour of duty in the army in Afghanistan.

It is not long before Ally is proposing very publicly to his long-time girlfriend, Davy's sister, and Davy falls for her friend - despite her being English and him having little liking for things south of the border. The actress/singer Jane Horrocks (of Little Voice fame) gave a fine performance as Davy's mother, who is devastated to learn on the night of her 25th wedding anniversary that her beloved husband has a 24-year-old daughter, the result of a one-night stand.

The film contains some sad and poignant moments, and some of the story lines could have been developed more. For instance, Ally's guilt complex and difficulty in coming to terms with the crippling injuries suffered by one of his army mates, is only touched upon. This no doubt is because the main theme of the film is the upbeat story of two young couples, and one not so young, and their on/off relationships. There are many light-hearted moments to bring a smile to your face, particularly once your ear becomes adjusted to the Scottish accents.

It also provides a perfect vehicle to showcase the songs and music of the Proclaimers, the pop/folk singing twins from Scotland. Their songs are scattered throughout the film and their repeated refrains and strong beats make it impossible for the audience not to feel involved and tap their feet along with the music.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening's viewing. As always, the occasion is made all the better by the themed meal and cocktail provided separately, if desired, by the Fourcroft Hotel. This week's offering was haggis with neeps and tatties, followed by Clootie dumplings - a real treat and adding to the relaxed informal atmosphere of these film nights.

The next film night is Monday, March 17, at 8 (or 6.30 if partaking of the pre-film meal, which, unlike the film, needs booking in advance), when Blue Jasmine will be shown. This stars Cate Blanchett in a well-deserved 2014 Best Actress Oscar winning performance. Director Woody Allen is back to his best with this film. Make sure you don't miss it.
