A half-century of unanswered points and a second home league victory within a week put smiles on Tenby United faces last Saturday. The Seasiders made the very best of perfect conditions for running rugby to condemn their youthful visitors from Cardigan to a crushing defeat. The United set out their stall early, looking to release their threequarters, but ironically it was the visitors who were given the first opportunity to register points after the home side was adjudged to have gone offside at a ruck. The penalty attempt went narrowly wide from 40 metres out and, in all honesty, that was about as close as the Ceredigion outfit came to a score. Neil Powling was more successful with his boot just a few minutes later, the penalty chance having arrived after a fine break from centre Sion Brace. The home pack recycled well, but could not force the five-pointer, Powling having to settle for a regulation penalty from 15 metres out. The sunny conditions obviously suited Brace, who cut through the visiting defences once again just minutes later and fed strong running fullback Alex Watt. Initially the chance seemed lost as he was unable to link up with his support, but Will Crockford was on hand to take the pass and crash over for the first try of the afternoon wide on the right. Powling's conversion attempt slipped to the left of the uprights. The Seasiders sensed the opportunity to practice some training ground moves and some more slick handling saw Watt release powerful centre Mark Heywood. The forwards did well to retain possession and moved the ball right where a three-man overlap beckoned, but some indecision and a knock forward saw that chance go begging. Tenby refused to release their stranglehold on the game, clearly dominating in the tight exchanges. The back row of Wyndham Williams, Harry Bolton and skipper Anthony Griffiths were winning the race to virtually every breakdown and producing good turnover ball. With a little over a quarter of the match gone, Powling brought the game to life with a fine individual try, after fine approach work from Wyndham Williams and Simon Griffiths. The stand-off spotted a gap behind the Cardy backline and chipped ahead, then used his footballing skills to kick the ball beyond the visiting fullback and win the race for the touchdown in the shadow of the posts. The extra two points were a formality, taking the Tenby lead to 15-0. Cardigan battled bravely and as the half drew to a close, put together their best period of pressure in the match, earning a very kickable penalty after Tenby were guilty of offside. To the surprise of most onlookers, the visitors opted for the kick to the corner. The chance to catch and drive was lost, however, as the Seasiders defended the lineout well, allowing Powling to clear. The visitors created another chance immediately when a quickly taken lineout saw the number eight sprint along the touchline and seem to cross for the score. But he was adjudged to have put a foot in touch on the way and Tenby were given another chance to clear, bringing the first period to a close. The home side began the second half in rather lacklustre fashion, possibly because the coaching team had opted to make three changes within a few minutes of the break. Nicky Guymer and Scott Payne replaced Michael Lewis and Simon Griffiths up front, while the impressive Will Crockford made way for Andrew Davies. It took a full 15 minutes after the break for the Seasiders to settle and it was a towering Powling Garryowen that was the catalyst. Sion Brace chased the kick well and wrapped up the Cardigan defender, forcing him to give away the penalty for holding on the floor. Powling slotted the resulting penalty from just outside the 22. Cardigan again battled back bravely and looked to spread the ball deep in Tenby territory, but Brace was alive to the danger and anticipated the move to perfection, intercepting on his own 22, before running the length of the field to touchdown under the posts. The conversion was once again a formality for Powling, taking the United 25 points clear. By now, the visitors' heads were starting to drop and it was that man Brace again who sliced open the visiting defence. This time, Andrew Davies was on hand to support the centre and he made good ground into the Cardigan 22, before a Tenby scrum was awarded. From the maul that followed, skipper Anthony Griffiths was driven over by his pack, but the referee was not able to see the ball grounded and so could not award the try. The number eight was not to be denied, however, and with the Tenby scrum in control, he was able to plunge over for a well-deserved score that Powling again converted. It was now all one-way traffic, with Tenby virtually camped on the visitors' line. Griffiths must have fancied himself for a second score within minutes as the United were awarded another five-metre scrum. The same tactic was employed, but this time the Cardigan front row was adjudged to have pulled the scrum down and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty try. Powling added the extras. The United threequarters were now running the ball at will, Powling supplying Watt with a superb pass that put him into space. The ever-present Brace was in support and acted as the link to substitute Dan Shooter (who had replaced Gavin Brace), to finish a flowing move. For once, Powling's kick slid wide of the posts. Cardigan may have thought that their pain was over, but there was still time for replacement scrum-half Andrew Davies to get his name on the scoresheet, a fine individual effort seeing him cross beneath the sticks. Powling's conversion brought up the half century on the stroke of the final whistle. This was by far and away Tenby's most comprehensive victory of the season and although it was against an inexperienced Cardigan outfit, it proves what a dangerous attacking outfit they can be when they have the right platform.
