A LOCAL man who has been organising help for Romanian orphans through local volunteers gave feedback to parents, head teachers, and Duke of Edinburgh staff at Pembrokeshire College earlier this month in the Merlin Theatre.
Bob Inglesant from Haverfordwest has been working with the Romanian charity Agape to provide accommodation for orphans who, on reaching the age of 18, are no longer eligible to live in an orphanage.
"Accommodation for some of the homeless orphans has been provided by a college in Baia Mare in Romania," Bob explained. "They are living on one floor of the school building and, in lieu of rent, volunteer workers provide decorating and maintenance help in other parts of the school.
During a recent trip we carried out some substantial redecoration and laid carpet in the school's boarding accommodation. Then came the important task of renewing the very old electric wiring and fuse box in the orphans' accommodation and the redecoration of some of their rooms."
In all, 33 teenagers from Pembrokeshire volunteered their help, some of whom were Duke of Edinburgh students. Each volunteer raised £500. "Every penny raised was used towards the project," Bob explained. "£200 covered the cost of each volunteer's travel and meals, and £300 was used toward the cost of materials needed to carry out the work."
Transport for the volunteers was provided by Summerdale Coaches, of Letterston, who donated the use of a coach for the 17 days of the trip. "I'm really proud of the work done by all the volunteers," Bob concluded. "I thought it was very important to acknowledge what they've achieved and provide feedback to parents, head teachers and other interested parties - which is why I arranged the briefing session at Pembrokeshire College."
Bob Inglesant is planning another trip to Romania next year with volunteers. If you're interested in taking part or would like to make a donation, you can contact Bob on 01437 766403 or 07971 808148.
