Choosing a present for your parents can prove difficult at the best of times, but one gift given to a dad on last year's Father's Day was an easy choice.

For 48-year-old Anthony Dinan, of Cliff Road, Wiseman's Bridge, gave his 68-year-old dad Tony, one of his kidneys on the special occasion.

A year later and the father and son are delighted to say that the transplant was a success as they enjoyed with their families the Father's Day celebrations at Tony's home in Gorseinon last weekend.

Tony required the transplant after his kidneys failed suddenly in mysterious circumstances, and he became very ill.

Specialists in London told him that his kidneys might regenerate, given time, but after spending two-and-a-half years on dialysis, and with his health failing, he felt it was time to act, with each one of his three children stepping forward to offer their dad a chance to live a full and long life.

"On June 16 of last year, which was Father's Day, my son Anthony and I entered the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff, where he gave me the greatest gift anyone could give - the gift of life," Tony told the South Wales Evening Post in an interview recently.

"My health and morale were very low, but my son came forward and said 'let's get on with it'.

"I can't describe how I feel about what he's given me, I can't put it into words really.

"It was a big decision for him and a big decision for me. My son's total commitment to donating one of his kidneys to me has given me my life back. I can look forward and enjoy every day," explained Tony.
