Two students at Coleg Sir Gâr have been shortlisted in a fashion competition and will find out if they've been successful today (Friday).
Degree honours student Julia Davies Maddocks from Tegryn and Emily Latham from Whitland who is studying an extended diploma at the college's Carmarthen campus, have both been shortlisted for the inaugural Llanelli Fashion Week competition, produced by top agency McCallion Brown.
The competition is offering the overall winner a week's internship with Welsh designer Jayne Pierson who has showcased her work at London and Paris Fashion Week, worked for designers Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen and is also a former student of the college.
The two students submitted designs based on a choice of sportswear, high-street daywear and eveningwear with various budgets allocated for each category. A mood board was also required by the judges to illustrate brand identity, the target customer and an illustrated drawing of five potential looks for their collection including colour and fabric selection and a technical drawing for sample-making.
"I took contrasting concepts such as bygone culture and contemporary architecture with a mix of old Roman and Celtic relics and architecture, to inspire my collection towards high-end ready-to-wear eveningwear," said Julia Davies Maddocks from Tegryn. "The structure and silhouette was a reflection of my inspiring research. I wanted to encompass an innovative way of producing patterns and construction and the idea behind the collection was to bring in a new and unusual silhouette, with complexity, but well-made."
Shorlisted hopeful Emily Latham from Whitland said: "I have used the suit as the basis behind my collection. I envisaged the suit becoming a new silhouette which was more appealing to the female market. In order to achieve this, I combined the idea of Japanese traditional clothing with the common pinstripe fabric, which we know so well. The silhouette takes influence from the Furisode; a brightly coloured, traditional Japanese gown which is combined with a royal theme to add a sense of richness and sophistication when worn as eveningwear."
The fashion week finale which will announce the overall winner, is taking place on today (Friday) at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli and is in aid of the Ray Gravell and friends Charitable Trust.
