The Welsh Government has announced the extension of two pilot projects aimed at tackling bovine TB through improved biosecurity, herd management and closer collaboration between farmers and vets - Plaid Cymru must match words with action, Reform Wales have stated.

While Reform Wales welcomes efforts to reduce the spread of bovine TB, the announcement comes after the Senedd backed a Reform Wales motion calling for a comprehensive, science-led approach to tackling the disease, including recognising wildlife as a source of infection and ensuring scientifically validated control methods are considered.

Importantly, Plaid Cymru voted in favour of the Reform motion, which also called for targeted wildlife control, including culling, to be given full and proper consideration where supported by scientific evidence.

Commenting, Reform Wales’ Shadow Cabinet Minister for Food, Farming and Rural Affairs, Laura Anne Jones MS said:“Farmers have been living with the devastating consequences of bovine TB for far too long, and they need more than another extension of pilot projects.

“Just a few weeks ago, Plaid Cymru voted with Reform Wales’ debate motion in support of a targeted science-led approach to bovine TB, today’s announcement must therefore be about more than continuing the same approach. Plaid voted for our plans to combat bovine TB, now they need to show Welsh farmers that those votes mean something.

“Reform Wales will continue to push for every scientifically validated measure to be considered if we are serious about eradicating bovine TB. Farmers deserve a Government that follows the evidence, makes the difficult decisions and delivers results.

“Welsh Government cannot leave ‘Wildlife control’ out of their plans, it is a vital piece of the puzzle to address if they are truly serious about tackling this devastating disease one and for all.”
