Some weird and wonderful attire was on display at the recent Farmers' Market in Haverfordwest.

To mark September as Farmers' Market month, the event took the form of a Harvest Fayre with a number of special attractions.

One of these was a fancy dress competition for all the stallholders.

It was won by Queen Bee, Ruth Richards and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Shirley Richards dressed as a flower, of West Valley Honey Farm, Wiston.

Runners-up were David Baster, of Little Rhyndaston Nurseries, Hayscastle, as a scarecrow, and Pat Bean, of Springfields Fresh Produce, Manorbier, as a daffodil.

The judges were the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Leslie Raymond, and the manager of the Riverside shopping precinct, Roland Keevil. They presented Ruth Richards with a bottle of bubbly.

A guess-the-weight of the pumpkin competition raised £118 for the Paul Sartori Foundation. The prize of a hamper of local produce was won by Mrs. G. Kingston with an entry of 15lbs 11ozs.

Pembrokeshire County Council food officer, Kate Morgan, who organises the market, hosted cookery demonstrations, while Aeros James, of Newport, displayed her skills at the rare art of corn dollymaking.

Other entertainment included folk dancing by pupils from Spittal School and music by the Fishguard-based folk group, East of Erin.

Special meals containing produce from the market were also available from the nearby Fishguard Arms, while 'Harvest Fayre' soup was available at the Rendezvous coffee shop in the Ocky White department store across the river.

"The day was a great success," said Kate Morgan. "The weather was very kind and many of the stalls sold out early on."
