Monkton Priory School's long-standing head teacher, William Rees, retired last Friday to glowing tributes from Pembroke Town Council, Monkton Voice Tenant and Residents Association and Monkton Communities First.
Tributes described William as an outstanding head teacher and highlighted his professionalism, leadership and dedication to the children of Monkton.
During his 25 years at the helm, he succeeded in his ambition to make the school a vibrant part of the Monkton community.
This was recognised in 1999 when he was awarded the MBE for services to education and earlier this year, he received the Welsh Assembly Government, 'Service to Wales' award which recognises those who have made a significant contribution to Wales.
A presentation assembly drew together many who had known him throughout his time at the school, including Clr. Dillwyn Davies, who taught William many years ago when he was head teacher at Argyle Street School, Pembroke Dock.
In an emotional speech, William spoke about how much he had enjoyed his time in Monkton and seeing children develop into active and responsible members of society.
He paid tribute to his loyal staff and to the huge support received from so many sections of the community.
In closing, he reminded the children that they should never forget that they are 'Best in the West - No doubt about it'.
During his well-earned retirement, William is looking forward to spending time with his two young granddaughters, tending his garden and watching rugby at Parc y Scarlets.
