HAVE you been inspired by the stories featured in 'Who do you think you are?' on BBC2 recently? Have you already made a start on your family tree? Do you need a bit of extra help to take you back another generation or to find out more about your ancestors? Whatever your experience in family history, the Dyfed Family History Society have something special for you. On Saturday, February 12, at St. Peter's Civic Hall in Carmarthen, the Dyfed Family History Society are holding an all-day event on family history. Admission is free and everyone is welcome between 10.30 am and 4 pm. The day starts with the society's annual general meeting and is followed at 11.30 am by the guest speaker, who, this year, is Roger Thomas from 'English Heritage'. During the afternoon, there will be practical help available on family history research from members of the Dyfed Family History Society. Roger Thomas, who was born in Pembroke and spent his childhood locally, is now the military support officer of 'English Heritage', with responsibility for providing advice on post-medieval military archaeology and architecture. In 1993, he undertook a survey of 19th and 20th century defence works in Pembrokeshire and, subsequently, wrote a book on the same subject. Roger has recently contributed to the latest Pevsner guide 'The Buildings of Wales - Pembrokeshire', published by Yale last year. He has also acted as a consultant on a number of historical television programmes such as 'Restoration' and 'One Foot in the Past'. Visitors to St. Peter's Civic Hall are invited to bring along their own family history problems and, during the afternoon, members of the society will be on hand to use their expertise in suggesting possible solutions to those problems. Tea and coffee will be on sale to sustain all the participants!
