Families in Pembrokeshire are being encouraged to make small, manageable changes towards a healthier lifestyle. A new 12-week pilot programme - the 'Pembrokeshire Family Challenge' - is helping local families to improve their health and well-being in several different ways. Last week, the challenge focused on food with a special healthy eating event at the Picton Centre, Haverfordwest. Families took part in workshops delivered by a dietician looking at issues like portion sizes, food groups and nutrients, and food labelling. Lots of new types of fruit and vegetables were tried out, with produce provided by Tesco, Haverfordwest, and there was information on oral health and school meals. Pembrokeshire County Council's healthy eating mascot Lennie the Leek entertained the children and encouraged them to eat more healthily. Clr. Sian James, cabinet member for health and well-being, said the event helped to reinforce simple healthy eating messages in a relaxed and informative environment. "Our message about healthy eating is really about going back to basics - it's about getting the right balance and controlling portion sizes." Ten families in the county are taking part in the challenge, which focuses on healthy eating, physical activity, family time and social activity. Health Challenge Pembrokeshire is a partnership of organisations working together to improve health and wellbeing, including the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board and Pembrokeshire County Council.
