Events are taking place across the UK next Tuesday, July 19, to mark National Falls Awareness Day. Working with Age Concern, Pembrokeshire County Council and the local Care and Repair Team, Claire Sims, head occupational therapist with Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust, and Sally Gulliver, the Trust's trauma liaison nurse, are busy preparing for an event in Haverfordwest. Organised as part of a national initiative run by Help the Aged, the day aims to promote falls prevention amongst older people. Falls are the most common cause of accidental death or serious injury in this age group, with an estimated 300 patients admitted to hospital in Pembrokeshire every year after suffering a fall. A team of specialists will be on hand at Castle Square from 10 am to 4 pm on July 19. They will be able to answer questions and give advice about falls prevention and safety in the home, dealing with topics including footwear, eyesight, exercise, medication and safety equipment. Fall prevention advice packs will also be available.
