The new art exhibition, Face to Face, opens at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery tomorrow (Saturday).
The exhibition features work by father and son John Uzzell Edwards and Charley Uzzell Edwards, aka Pure Evil.
The original plan for the exhibition was to show John's works from the '80s, based on the carnivals that took place in the coal mining valleys each summer. These were to be loosely linked with what he saw as the carnival-type characters that populated Dylan Thomas's play for voices, Under Milk Wood, in an exhibition that celebrated the humour of the valleys, that lifting of spirit in hard times and the centenary of the great Welsh poet.
Sadly John died in March after a short and sudden illness.
His wife Mary said: "As a family, we decided to go ahead with this exhibition, which is what he wanted and knew we would do this for him. He adored Tenby; our first two homes were here, he had his studio on the North Beach where he painted with his usual vigour and dedication, our children Charley and Esther were born here and ever since, Tenby has drawn us back time after time. But the carnival theme seemed no longer suitable. Having decided to have a father/son show, Charley's work, with his confrontational faces, gave us the idea of 'Face to Face', with heads and figures looking across the gallery at each other."
Tenby Museum's collections manager, Mark Lewis, stated: "John was one of the most important Welsh artists and a good friend to the museum. Charley has established himself as a street artist and gallery owner of national renown. The museum is honoured and proud to have this exhibition."
This sales exhibition is being officially opened today (Friday) by Charley Uzzell Edwards and runs until Sunday, May 18. The museum is now open daily, 10 am - 5 pm (last admission 4.30 pm).
