Additional pedestrian space has been introduced in Saundersfoot to allow for ‘café culture’ over the summer season, as well as helping villagers and visitors alike with social distancing.
Following discussions with the Community Council and County Council officers a trial scheme has been installed at the seaside village to provide additional pedestrian queuing and circulatory space, and in some instances space for café culture, with a temporary boundary set up between walkways and the roadway, as Clr. Phil Baker explains.
“As the County Councillor for Saundersfoot I am eager to provide as much social distancing space for our villagers and visitors. Encouraged by Welsh Government to provide such space, many cities, towns and villages are undergoing a similar transition that Saundersfoot saw installed this week,” he said.
The scheme tries to cater for as many different users as possible - villagers and visitors shopping, access for residents, parking and delivery space for businesses.
On Cambrian Terrace there is additional space for pedestrians and café culture, while The Strand sees space mainly for pedestrians and a small area for café culture.
Car parking spaces have been retained for access to the Pharmacy and hair salon. The remaining spaces along The Strand are unaltered as are spaces opposite The Spar.
“I am conscious that blue badge holders have lost some dedicated spaces and hope that drivers will be able to park using the other conditions applicable to the badge use,” continued Clr. Baker.
“It was not an easy scheme to put together and I really hope that everyone living in and visiting the Village works together to adapt the way that we live at the moment, to support everyone through the difficulties that the Covid-19 pandemic has hit us with,” he added.
