Tenby has been described as ‘exquisite’ in the latest book from best-selling American author and travel writer Bill Bryson.
Bryson’s first travel book in 15 years, ‘The Road to Little Dribbling’ is a follow up to ‘Notes from a Small Island’ which became the bestselling travel book ever, telling humourous tales of the author’s trip around Britain to celebrate the ‘green and kindly’ island that had become his adopted country.
In his latest offering, Bryson makes a brand-new journey around Britain to see what has changed, with Tenby featuring in one of the chapters.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Dr. Peter Easy told his colleagues of the resort’s mention in Bryson’s book, reading a couple of extracts on Tenby - ‘I had heard that it is a charming place, but in fact it is exquisite - full of pastel-coloured houses, sweet-looking hotels and guesthouses, characterful pubs and cafés, glorious beaches and gorgeous views,’ wrote Bryson.
‘It is everything you could want in a coastal retreat. How had this escaped me for so long? Tenby stands on a steep-sided promontory high above its many beaches, which are reached by fetching zig-zag paths, and seems bounded everywhere by water.
‘I walked up and down practically every street in Tenby and I don’t think I passed a house or cottage that I wouldn’t have been happy to own. I strolled along the beaches and admired the boats in its harbour and the views to Caldey Island, two miles offshore,’ he continued.
Clr. Dr. Easy also told his colleagues that Bryson mentions a story he read in the local paper of a couple from America setting their sat nav to try and take them to Caldey Island and getting their vehicle stuck on Castle Beach!
Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, told her fellow members that some of Bryson’s quotes would be nice to add to the Tenby in Bloom portfolio.
