The A477 road between the Sageston and Carew roundabouts was closed on Wednesday afternoon after a suspected World War II hand grenade was discovered at the edge of Carew Airfield, approximately 10 metres from the road.
"Due to the military history of the airfield and the likelihood that the item was discarded ordnance, and its close proximity to the road, the decision was taken to temporarily close the A477 on grounds of public safety," said a spokesman for Dyfed Powys Police.
Members of the bomb disposal team later removed the hand grenade and the road was re-opened at around 5.15 pm.
"Police would like to thank motorists for their patience, and the media for their assistance," said the spokesman.
Army bomb disposal experts confirmed on Wednesday that the grenade was a 'live' device, but that it was unlikely to have exploded due to its age and condition.
"The grenade has been identified as a British WW II, type 36 device, which is still commonly found. It was removed from the scene by the army and taken back to their base where it will be disposed in the correct manner."
