The exhibitions which opened at Narberth's Oriel Q on Saturday show three different artists with immense talent. Neil Crowther, in the main gallery, has a collection of oil paintings that capture the form and structure of the Pembrokeshire landscape. Using patterns and strong colour, his compositions give familiar beauty spots a dramatic make over. The cliffs and rock formations of Marloes, the beach at Sandy Haven, Ricketts Head, Druidstone and the smaller studies of trees and churches have all been carefully considered and constructed and rendered in intense colours. The same eye for light and form, colour and patterns has been cast upon the human form, and also some delightful paintings of still life. Neil studied at the Slade and has taught in Tasker Milward and is now a part time lecturer at Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest. In Oriel Fach, Ruth Harries, also from Haverfordwest, has a beautiful show of textile pictures which are based on her observation of relationships. There are figurative and abstract elements, which re-present the emotionally charged emotions, atmospheres and recollections within the family. There are also works which are part of an ongoing series, which consider aspects of her Welsh identity and the use of the Welsh language through the generations of her family. On the stairs, photographer Alan Evans has created a 360 º image of a view of Worm's Head which has great significance to him and his family. Entitled 'B to B', he has printed 21 images and placed them close together so you can take in the whole sweep. David Hockney used this technique and it is very effective, encouraging you to think about what you are looking at, and as Alan says it represents a journey through memories. As a child, the family went there regularly to play and picnic, but it is also the scene of tragedy when a nephew of his wife's family was drowned. A beautiful place but also dangerous, perhaps a metaphor on life. These exhibitions are on until July 5 and the gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 10 am -5 pm.
