The exhibition of work by one of Wales' foremost contemporary artists, John Uzzell Edwards, opened at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery on Friday, August 3.

The show, entitled Paintings, was officially opened by well-known artist, blacksmith, broadcaster and self professed patriot, David Petersen.

Chairman of trustees, Clr. Michael Williams, introduced David Petersen and in this introduction Clr. Williams reminisced about John Uzzell Edwards who he has known for many years, recalling a hair-raising trip in a vivid red kit car that John previously owned called The Bomb and the fun that they had in Tenby.

Michael then welcomed home John, who had a studio in Tenby in the 1960s, before handing over to David Petersen.

David proclaimed being asked to open the show a "big honour and a privilege." He and John had first met at Tenby Museum when John previously had a show in 2000 and the effect of seeing the "spirit and magic" of these paintings "blew me away".

David went on to say that John Uzzell Edwards was a "name when it came to painting, one of the finest painters working today. He is a painter of international repute, a painter who paints about Wales and draws inspiration from the country's fantastic history, who gains inspiration from the rhythm and structure of Welsh quilts.

"He is one of the most courageous, most innovative artists currently at work, who can draw beautifully and he is expert at extracting the essence of a story. I know of no other artist who works so hard. He can truly see things, he does not just look, he truly sees. All of his pictures have magic within them and I am in awe of his talent."

The sales exhibition, which features works showing John's passion for Welsh heritage and quilts, including prints, runs until September 2. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm (last admission 4.30 pm).
