From Monday to Friday last week (August 20-24), an Exhibition of Crafts was held in Thomas Memorial Church, Saundersfoot.

But this was no ordinary display. Under one roof, visitors were able to see and admire examples of many hobbies that had become crafts. These ranged through: knitting, patchwork, tapestry, woodwork, quilting, cross-stitch, quilting, embroidery, stone painting, crochet, pyrography, decoupage, sewing, clocks, braid making, spinning, Victorian sewing-boxes, baking, jam making, collage, glass painting and lace making.

Despite the advent of computers, television, play stations etc., many people have obviously found fun, enjoyment and recreation in other activities. Visitors were able to see lace-making demonstrations by Trixie Nuttall and Margaret Humphries who also showed how to make boxes from old Christmas and birthday cards, whilst Helen Collison showed how to spin wool and to make braid.

The exhibition was well attended by both local people and holidaymakers with many going home, maybe, to try a new craft having whetted their appetites at the demonstrations by Trixie, Margaret and Helen. How lovely it was to watch young people sampling lace and braid making besides learning of a use for those left-over cards.

Grateful thanks are given to all who gave items for the sale stall, to Muriel Parsell for her delicious cakes and to Trixie for her tasty jam.

Special thanks are for Margaret Humphries who was instrumental in arranging the display, to Janette and Roy Phillips, Joyce and Alun Davies, and to all, too many to name individually, who contributed with items and time for stewarding. The sum of £260 was made, which will help with the ongoing restoration of the church.

Plans are already being made for another display next August, when more 'taster' hobbies and crafts will be demonstrated than were able to be shown this year (watch this space).
