A major regeneration project is about to get underway in Pendine.

Plans are afoot for improvements to the main car park and traffic calming measures through the community.

A sculpture will also be erected near the car park to welcome people to the area.

The works are aimed at enhancing the seaside community and making it a must-see destination for visitors.

Tenders have been advertised and contractors are expected on site within weeks.

The plans have just been showcased at a special open day in Pendine.

Carmarthenshire County Council is driving forward the proposals in a bid to put the town on the map and increase visitor numbers.

A special task group has been set up to look at ways of developing the seaside community.

The improvement works include an attractive new gateway feature into the village, new footpath and cycle links between Pendine and Llanmiloe and environmental enhancements and improved access to the car park in the centre of Pendine.

Traffic calming measures, new signs and landscaping programmes are also being planned.

Funding for the first phase of works has come from the county council, the Welsh Assembly Government and Pendine Community Council.

The council's strategic project co-ordinator, David Roberts, said there had been a good response to the open day.

He said: "More than 65 residents and businesspeople attended and the feedback was incredibly positive.

"Everyone was very supportive of the plans and we are now looking forward to moving onto the site to start work."

The council's regeneration executive board member, Clr. Clive Scourfield, said: "Extensive work has been carried out to find out exactly what improvements are needed.

"The gateway plans are aimed at providing an attractive focal point for visitors entering the community.

"Pendine has the potential to be a first class leisure destination and our aim is to work together to realise that aim."
