The new point to point season in West Wales continues at Cilwendeg, near Boncath, tomorrow (Saturday), with the Tivyside Hunt steeplechases certain to attract a large following. With an extended race card - the Maiden's Race now being split three ways - an exciting afternoon's racing over the three-mile right-hand course is in prospect. Mr. and Mrs. Dewi Lewis, of the Pantycaws Stud at Clynderwen, are the joint secretaries and they anticipate that their excellent steeplechase course will be in fine fettle for the event, with the going good or good to soft. "Milder weather is supposed to be on the way and, providing that it is dry overhead, we should see some top class racing," said Dewi. At this stage in the year, several new horses are just beginning to reach peak form and, with over £1,500 in prizemoney, the excitement is certain to be intense on the day and supporters are urged to ensure that they arrive early - the site is on the northern edge of Boncath alongside the B4332 Newcastle Emlyn road. There are 199 runners entered, including several from the Worcester and Shrewsbury area. The first race, for Hunt members, subscribers and farmers, is at noon, with the main events being the Men's Open and Ladies Open at 1.30 and 2 pm, respectively. Following the steeplechases, there are two exhilarating pony events over a flat course that are certain to catch the imagination as some of the ponies and their riders - from as far afield as the Cotswolds - may be relatively unknown quantities. The next fixture is the Llandeilo Farmers on Sunday, April 9 - again at Cilwendeg - to be followed by the South Pembrokeshire at Lydstep on Easter Monday, April 17, and the Pembrokeshire Hunt event near Fishguard on Saturday, June 3.
