The county council's decision to reduce the hours of street lighting in towns has come under criticism again from local councillors.

Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, said that she had been approached by a resident of The Glebe who had complained about how dark it left that area of the town.

"They explained that it is like a black hole around there and far too extreme. Surely the county council could switch every third light on possibly, just to get some light up there," said Clr. Mrs. Thomas.

The county council said the switch-off was to reduce its carbon footprint and save at least £200,000 a year on energy bills.

"Surely it's become a health and safety issue now and very dangerous for residents. If anyone breaks their leg because of a lack of street lighting, then it must be the county council's responsibility," commented Clr. Paul Rapi.

Clr. Mrs. Thomas asked if the council could write to the authority to see if they would consider reviewing their policy.
