Friday evening saw a successful social event in East Williamston Community Hall which was designed to highlight the very popular Jubilee Park and Nature Trail. All who attended were fascinated by the large display of photographs of the park from its earliest days. It also featured pictures of the allotments, now thriving, and the volunteer group Friends of Jubilee Park. The latter is designed to attract anyone who can give a couple of social hours once a month to do seasonal work in the park. This may involve tasks such as planting wild flowers, clearing scrub, doing remedial work on paths or helping to maintain gates and fences. People of all ages come to help and more details can be obtained from Kathy on (01834) 811142. The park now attracts visitors from far and wide, and has won awards for its innovation and the dedication of its creators. It is sited on former agricultural and common land, and of particular interest to the admirers of the display was an old map and accompanying document showing the East Williamston Estate fields for auction by John Francis and Son on October 6, 1910. The tenants of the various areas are also named, some of whose descendants are still in the locality. Another feature of the evening was news of land purchase to extend the park. Pictures of its woodland area and wildflower meadow were fascinating, as were ideas for another car parking area and a field to hold events. Many local people have given donations to purchase this land and, although more is still needed to help repay a loan, the completion can now meanwhile go ahead. The vendor is to be thanked for his co-operation and forbearance during the time everyone worked hard to raise sufficient capital. A very generous donation, in memory of a loved one, was given during the evening and this may be a way in which others might care to celebrate a life, with a bequest towards a lovely place for future generations to enjoy. Anyone wishing to contribute towards the development fund, or to plant a memorial tree, can contact Ian on (01834) 813778. A plant and produce stall at the event was well supported and yielded a gratifying £35, while the bar did a thriving trade. The Community and Hall Association, the charity which runs both the hall and the park, is holding its Annual General Meeting on Friday, July 18, in the hall at 7 pm. It is open to all residents in East Williamston parish and there will be another social evening following the meeting.
