WELSH Museums festival will see and galleries across Wales including Carmarthenshire Museum, Dylan Thomas Boathouse, the Museum of Land Speed and Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre throwing open their doors this Hallowe’en half-term.

This year however, the Federation of Museums and Galleries of Wales is putting sustainability centre stage, encouraging a greener Hallowe’en.

Rather than glitter, single-use decorations and plastic props, the festival from October 24 to November 1 is all about autumnal trails, natural materials and planet-friendly activities that make the most of the season. From spooky storytelling to woodland-inspired crafts, families can look forward to a programme built around what autumn already gives us for free.

Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport Heledd Fychan said: “I’m looking forward to seeing what's going to be on offer from the scores of local museums and galleries taking part. I welcome the Festival’s approach to celebrating Halloween in a greener and more sustainable way, and it is also a great way for families to participate in their local culture and heritage, for little to no cost.”

Last year, 52 museums and galleries took part. This year, more museums and galleries than ever are signing up, with venues offering trails, workshops, storytelling and family activities throughout half-term.

Carly Davies, of the Federation of Museums and Galleries of Wales, said: “Our revamped Halloween resource is all about cutting back on glitter and steering activities towards more natural materials instead, so families can enjoy the spooky season without the environmental cost.

“Discovering your local museum or gallery – often with free entry, or free events with their admission charge – is a really lovely way to spend time with your children over the October half term, especially if we get our traditional rainy half term!”
