Pembrokeshire abstract artist Kate Freeman brings her Show ‘Visual Music’ to Narberth’s Oriel Q Gallery next month.

A breath of fresh air with its patches of bright flat colour, balanced by sharp linear contrasts, very much in the way a piece of music leads you from quiet, still passages to stronger, more insistent rhythms and emphasis.

Kate’s series of paintings on paper, in acrylic ink and collage entitled ‘Jazz’ illustrate this all-important balance in abstract work.

Happy to follow up accidental marks and splashes as she works, her painting is rooted in observation.

Walking the west coast of Pembrokeshire near her home, her attention, she says, is “drawn to the vivid greens of the moss slithering down purple-black rocks at Musselwick” or “the contrast between soft pink stone and the glinting turquoise sea at St Brides on a summer day.”

The exhibition will run from April 22 to May 23 in Oriel Q Gallery, 11, Market Street, Narberth SA67 7AX.

Oriel Q’s Artist of the month is felt maker Sue Cox, introducing us to images and objects woven with wool, sometimes augmented by silk and merino.

Her love of wool has enabled her to achieve a depth and intensity and even a sense of movement as she literally paints with the colour and texture of the fibres.

Her enthusiasm for her material is the starting point for her iridescent surfaces, whether on small objects or larger, more ambitious, images.

In the small room at the back of the Gallery, Oriel Q is now show-casing the innovative App – ‘Artivive’, highlighting this new digital tool for artists wishing to share their creative process with each other and even to add audio and animation.

There will be examples for you to try , plus pieces produced by Oriel Q members, exploring this exciting digital development.
