On Friday, March 3 Eleanor Hodgson and Helen Stoddart entertained members with some superb violin duetting.

The musicians are aunt (Helen) and niece (Eleanor). They started with some sea shanties and then a sonata by Teleman. Simple Gifts, known to many as Lord of the Dance, followed and then a Rondo by Carel Fodor, a little-known composer from the Netherlands.

This was followed by two Welsh folk songs, the first of which was titled In Pontypridd is my Love - not the first town one might think of when writing a romantic song - and then The Cuckoo’s Nest. Both had an unmistakably Welsh feel to them.

Some Mozart next, a piece which was played twice, the second time with music upside down! Eleanor played the famous Czardas tune by Vittorio Monti before both ladies played the work of another little-known composer, Cannabich.

Humoresque by Dvorak made everyone smile and the evening finished with three modern duets by Joanne Martin.

There was thunderous applause for the performers from the audience who could hardly believe that an hour had gone by.

Chairman Adrian thanked Eleanor and Helen on behalf of the audience before reminding them that there would be no meeting on March 10 and that on Friday, March 17 Alison Neil would be presenting her one-woman show ‘Glowing Bright’ which will be performed at St Mary's Church House, and not at St John’s.

Entry for that will be £10 and the performance starts at 7 pm.
