THOMAS Tudor, County Councillor for the Castle Ward, Haverfordwest, appreciated the opportunity to call into The VC Gallery and speak to Barry John about the gallery’s current art display, Reflections, a collection of oil paintings by Narberth-born artist Edgar Thomas.
The Pembrokeshire County Art Collection holds the largest publicly owned collection of works by Narberth-born artist Edgar Thomas (1862-1936) in Wales.
The exhibition is hosted by the VC Gallery in collaboration with Scolton Manor Park.
Edgar Thomas was chosen by the Welsh Nationalist movement Cymru Fydd (Young Wales) as one of the Welsh artists who would represent the movement through the arts.
Thomas was fascinated by chiaroscuro - the contrast of light and shade. Many of his works display a great technical skill and delicate brushwork in creating this contrast in oils.
Unfortunately, Thomas' promising career was relegated to obscurity by the rise of another Welsh artist from Pembrokeshire, who held an important exhibition in London just weeks before Thomas’ was due to open. This artist was Augustus John.
The VC Gallery was able to dig deep into the past art archives of the public collection to showcase on its walls the story of this forgotten artist who passed away in obscurity.
The exhibition was opened by Cllr Roy Thomas Haverfordwest Mayor and was joined by Cris Tomos, Cait Hilditch Collections Officer, Dr Simon Hancock MBE and Michelle Bateman VC Trustees and many VC members and the wider community.
The VC Gallery was proud to have been able to show this work and thank Cait, Simon and Pembrokeshire County Council for their help.
The show will be available to see throughout March 2026 and if you are interested in knowing the story of this exhibition or how it came to be shown at the VC please get in touch.
