A father-son writing duo based in Tenby have delved into different worlds for their first sci-fi book.

‘Hell Space: Revelations’ by D S and D J Sangster has been described as an epic, large-scale science fiction set in 2179, blending space opera spectacle with dystopian stakes.

Combining decades of classic science fiction influence with a fresh, modern perspective, the book is ideal for readers of James S. A. Corey, Andy Weir, Larry Niven and Arthur C. Clarke.

Humanity’s golden age of space expansion shatters when astronomer Jayne Flynn detects the first undeniable signs of alien intelligence in over a century. Simultaneously, an ancient, battle-scarred warship erupts from beneath Earth’s crust, triggering a cataclysmic supervolcano.

Earth is suddenly caught in an aeons-old war between the Graxx, a civilisation capable of destroying galaxies, and the Trine – enigmatic beings from deep space with a disturbing connection to humanity itself.

As the last survivors flee into the stars, a fragile alliance forms between the Earth Defense Fleet and the Trine. But trust is fragile, and ancient grudges run deep.

In the shadows, a ruthless human cult leader escapes captivity, intent on seizing control of humanity’s future. As terrifying truths emerge, preparations begin for a final confrontation, one that will decide whether humanity ascends…or is wiped from existence.

D S Sangster is a retired hotelier and lifelong sci-fi enthusiast, a passion that began over sixty-five years ago when he first discovered Ray Bradbury.

His influences range from Bradbury to Steven Erikson, and much of the science fiction in between.

D J Sangster is a retired solicitor who grew up surrounded by his father’s extensive sci-fi collection and developed a passion for the genre, drawing inspiration from authors such as Douglas Adams and Cormac McCarthy.

They both explained: “As we both loved Sci-Fi, what started as just an idea tossed around between father and son over a glass of red wine turned into our first attempt to write a novel with a full blown universe with aliens and catastrophe wherever you turned.

“Our process was highly collaborative but very informal. We would meet over lunch at least once a week and just talk through and refine the story in our own heads. We would agree which bits we each wanted to write and go off and write separately at our own pace.

“We then read each other's drafts, made suggestions and agreed the final version. It was a very smooth and argument free affair.

“We're delighted with how the book turned out and that it is being published but to be honest we had such fun and got to spend such amazing quality time together that the end product is simply a bonus.”

The book released on June 28 is published by Book Guild Ltd - a well-established independent book publishing company, which has been publishing books in all subjects for over 30 years. The Book Guild is an imprint of Troubador Publishing Ltd.
