Talented photographer Joann Randles, known for her impactful images capturing Welsh life and culture, is currently in the running for one of the UK’s most prestigious photography awards.
Joann - a former pupil of St Teilos and Greenhill School in Tenby, is a finalist for the UK's ‘Picture of the Year’ award.
The UK Picture Editors Guild, established in 1977, celebrates the very best in press photography from arts, portraiture to breaking news coverage.
Joann’s image of Mariia-Anastasiia Mikulska, a 15-year-old Ukrainian refugee now living in Wales holding a bouquet of sunflowers, was shortlisted by a panel of expert judges in the industry.
The picture was notably on the front page of the Sunday Times last year to celebrate Ukraine Independence Day.
Earlier this year some of Joann’s work on Welsh life and culture was exhibited at the National Botanic Garden of Wales and last year she proudly represented Wales in the Euro Celtic Art exhibition at the world famous Festival Interceltique de Lorient, the festival of which welcomed nearly a million visitors.
Joann said: “I’m so thrilled to be shortlisted for the ‘Picture of the Year’ at the UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards. I love my job, meeting new people and capturing stories.
“Finding out I had been shortlisted came as a total surprise as it is such a prestigious award in our industry.
“Therefore, to have one of my images recognised among so many outstanding press photographers from across the UK is incredibly rewarding.”
