May is always a great month for walking in Pembrokeshire, but this year it has been quite outstanding.

Early fine sunny summer weather has just added to the delight of the abundant spring flowers. However not quite all the walks enjoyed great weather. There were just five walkers for the first Nordic walk of May. It was a six-mile circular walk from St Brides Bay to Musselwick Sands and return via Marloes.

The coastal path was magnificent, lined with yellow gorse, pink thrift, red and white campion, mingled with the blue of violets and bluebells. The flowers more than made up for the unseasonal weather.

By the time the Saturday walkers visited Angle two days later, the weather had turned warm and sunny. The succession of vistas as they walked around the headland was further enhanced by the warm sunshine.

The weather stayed fine all that week, until the next Nordic walk on the 18th. Sunny and warm, it was a delightful walk from Minwear Woods, passing the recently renovated Blackpool Mill through to the Slebech Park Estate.

There the walkers took the long path through the woodland, passing the nodding bluebells, the scented wild garlic, the bright yellow buttercups, the pink campion and the various shaped leaves of different shades of green; all this while hearing a symphony of songbirds, the occasional Canada geese, the cawing of the crows and the cackle of the pheasants. What a delight for the senses!

When they reached Slebech Court, the walkers enjoyed the impressive fruit and vegetable garden and the ruins of the 12th century Crusaders church. It was a wonderful spot for a picnic lunch overlooking estuary, before starting the return journey.

The last highlight of the month was on Saturday 20 when 25 Steps2Health members made their annual visit to Caldey Island. Again the weather was great and the sea was calm. The walkers split into their usual groups and between them covered all the paths open to visitors. The cafe did a roaring trade at lunchtime, before people finally wended their way back to Tenby.

The first Steps2Health walk of June is a minibus trip to Colby Lodge Gardens. Please see the printed programme or visit the club website at www.steps2health.org.uk for information about future walks.
